Inspired by another
How do artists come up with ideas?
Problem Statment:
Create an artwork that has been inspired by another photographer. Inspiration can come in many forms. This can be in the form of ideas, characters, techniques, putting a personal / modern twist on a work, or even making fun of the photographer. The big things you cannot do are simply copy or try to replicate a composition
DO NOT DO THIS!
Initial Brainstorm
Task:
1. Find 3 photographers from the database that you find interesting. (database link). You can add more photographers if you would like to add more.
2nd database here (link)
Find a photographer who....
a. Is interesting (you will be doing research on this photographer)
b. has information that you can access... (about section on their website or biography)
c. has work that you like. (you will be shooting an assignment based on your photographers work)
Sketchbook
Task:
1. 2 page spread - Address the background with 2 colors (5 points)
2. Title your page with your photographer's name (5 points)
Figure out why your person takes pictures. What drives them. Your images need to have a conceptual connection to them, not just a technical consideration.
Examples: Ansel Adams is an incredibly well known nature photographer. His work is iconic. He didn't go out with the intention of taking pictures to make posters on walls and to take pretty pictures. One of his goals with his images was to help preserve the beauty of the land from being destroyed.
- Creation of national parks
- Awareness of American west
Themes you could explore:
- Anything you are trying to save, or anything anyone is trying to save or "preserve" or "hold on to"
- Taking images for a purpose of creating change
- Documenting places without people
Task:
1. Create 3 different concepts that you can be inspired by from your artist. Draw a thumbnail for each one concept / idea (5 points for each thumbnail, 3 total)
2. Decide on 2 different ways you can technically be inspired by your artist (think photographer choices, composition, or unique techniques). Draw a thumbnail sketch for each technical idea you come up with (2 total, 5 points each)
All thumbnails must be labeled with photographer choices (environment, type of light / time of day, body language, facial expression, props, clothing) - Failure to do this will result in 10 points take off of your grade.
Shooting
Task:
Take 12 photos on 2 different concepts using a variety of compositional techniques and changing the photographer choices.
Contact Sheet
Task:
1. Make a new page on your website. Title it with (your artist name).
2. Upload the following:
a. 3 images from your artist at the top of the page
b. Gallery 1 of your work for your first idea (12 unedited images)
c. Text box that answers how you were inspired by your artist both conceptually and technically
d. Gallery 1 of your work for your first idea (12 unedited images)
e. Text box that answers how you were inspired by your artist both conceptually and technically
3. Publish your page
Notes:
- Do not do a slider gallery.
- Be sure your images can be seen in full without cropping
Contact Sheet EVAL
Task:
1. You (the artist) pick you best image from each idea.
2. In the canvas assignment labeled "IBA CS," answer the following questions.
a. Idea 1: What frame number is your best image?
b. Idea 1: Why is this one the best compared to your others?
c. Idea 1: How did you include your artists work within your own? Technically? Conceptually?
d. Idea 1: If you were to reshoot, what would you do differently?
e. Idea 2: What frame number is your best image?
f. Idea 2: Why is this one the best compared to your others?
g. Idea 2: How did you include your artists work within your own? Technically? Conceptually?
h. Idea 2: If you were to reshoot, what would you do differently?
Editing
Task:
1. Pick your best image that represents the assignment.
2. Edit it to completion
3. Turn in via canvas (with your original unedited image)
Artist Statement
Task:
1. Write an artist statement that addresses the following:
- Who is your artist?
- Why did you pick your artist?
- How were you inspired conceptually by your artist? - How did you incorporate your artists ideas / concepts within your own work?
- How were you inspired technically by your artists? - Composition, lighting, photo choices, etc
