Pinhole Cameras
Problem Statment:
Students will create 5 successful images that showcase a variety of pinhole camera / compositional techniques.
Problem Statement
Materials
Camera Requirements
1. Light tight - does not let light in. Be sure to check the material using a strong flashlight.
2. Opens and Closes - The material you chose will need to be able to open and close easily.
3. Not too small - It should have a focal length bigger than your hand.
4. Durable - Cardboard does not hold up over time.

Camera Obscura
Requirements
Journal / data records
In your sketchbook, tape your photograph in. Next to it, record the following information
1. Type of light / intensity (cloudy, sunny)
2. Subject light (subject in sun vs in shade)
3. Distance your camera is from subject
4. Exposure Time (how long you took the photo for)
Photo Requirements
Take 1 good example for each of the following categories
1. Distortion
2. Double Exposure
3. Self Portrait
4. Ghost Portrait
High quality photo =
- Well exposed / good contrast
- sharp / in focus
Each photo needs to be turned in via canvas as a diptych. Follow the video tutorial for creating a diptych here (link coming soon)
Extreme Distortion
Distortion naturally occurs with pinhole photographs. Your distortion photograph needs to be an exaggerated example of distortion. This can include straight lines being bent or proportions being skewed. You can do this by putting your camera close to your subject, changing the point of view or bending your paper in your camera.
1 - Extreme Distorion
Double Exposure
Take 2 photographs on the same paper negative. Be sure to experiment with times. What will happen if your first exposure is 25% of the time and your second exposure is 75% of the time?
Double Exposue
Self Portrait
A photo of your complete self, or part of yourself
Self Portrait
Ghost Portrait
Have your subject(s) leave the photo during the exposure. The less the person is in the photograph, the more translucent they will be.
